On October 3, 1895, the first airgun was registered in Pueblo, Colorado.
Pueblo, Colorado is a small town located in the San Miguel County of Colorado. The population was 6,402 at the 2010 census. The climate is warm and temperate with an average temperature of 24 degrees Celsius (75 degrees Fahrenheit). The terrain is rolling with elevations reaching 2,000 feet (610 meters). Pueblo sits on the lower reaches of the Rocky Mountains and has a rich history dating back to 1847 when it served as the capital of New Mexico. In 1861, Pueblo became part of the United States after its admission into service as a state. Today, Pueblo remains an important cultural and commercial center for southern Colorado and parts of western Kansas. The first Europeans to visit Pueblo were French fur traders in 1764. From 1765-1767 Father Francisco Lopez led Jesuit missionaries to explore what would become present-day San Miguel County. On July 25th, 1768 Mexican soldiers killed Father Lopez while he was visiting his parishes near today’s downtown Pueblo. With Franciscan oversight ending in 1821, missions continued operations until they were secularized in 1830 by Mexican President Antonio López de Santa Anna. In 1847 Albuquerque businessman John Custer traveled through southern New Mexico on his way to find gold fields in California. He stopped at Fort Defiance on May 20th and 21st before continuing upriver to what is now Alamosa where he met General James Hinton who told him about the potential for gold mining at Taos Hills southeast of Alamosa “a great open country watered by several ranches running through it towards Mexico” according to one source; this area would later be known as Goldfields National Monument due to its deposits of gold nuggets found there from 1863-1869 during various prospecting campaigns organized under USGS auspices by then Secretaryof Interior Franklin Pierce Jr.. When news reached Gila River Valley miners that Custer had passed through their region they quickly set out into search for newstrike land grants which could become mines if found payable over time rather than just surface claims like those currently available for mineral extraction under Mining Act provisions implemented January 1st 1863 thru November 15th 1865 by USGS Deputy Director George Gibbs pursuant thereto1 . Pueblo was founded in 1847 by the Pueblo Revolt and is located in southern Colorado. The town was named after the ancient city of Puebla, Mexico, which is now in southern Jalisco. The original population of about 1,000 people lived in the area that today includes Pueblo and its surrounds. After Fort Larimer was built in 1857 to protect the area from Apache raids, many Puebloan residents abandoned their homes and fled to other parts of the state. However, a few hundred remained until they were forcibly removed by federal troops in 1862 during the Mexican-American War. Most of those who left never returned to their homes and villages within Pueblo County or what are now Cheyenne and Arapaho counties. Today there are only a few small remnant populations living within these boundaries. The first settler in what is now Pueblo County arrived on horseback around 1847. It is uncertain when or where this group originated but it is likely they were part of a larger migration that began earlier that year as Anglo settlers tried to find new land east of the Rockies. In response to rumors that Indian nations had gold buried beneath their soil, some Anglo settlers decided to open up new territory by searching for mines and prospecting for silver near San Miguel de Allende (present-day Albuquerque). Soon enough, wagon trains carrying goods back and forth between Santa Fe City (now Denver) and Gallup (later Gallup New Mexico) stopped at various centers along the route including Pahranagua (now Cheyenne), San Miguel de Allende, Carrizozo (present-day Alamosa), Tesuque (present-day Durango), Monterrey (present-day Nogales), Socorro (present-day Santa Fe], La Mesa del Norte( present-day Trinidad), Encinco( present-day Canon City?), El Paso( present day Eagle Pass?), Doña Ana( present day Tucson?), Coyote Gulch? In all likelihood not all travelers took advantage of road crossings at this point; travel conditions may have been too difficult for most people on horseback with little opportunity for rest or water availability closer to civilization. Instead some traveled downriver through canyon country where there were numerous crossing points available before reaching Fort Larimer on Rio Grande River northwest of modern Pueblo
Pueblo was formally founded on November 16, 1849 by the Spanish Pueblo Missionaries, who arrived in what is now Colorado Springs. The first Puebloan inhabitants were a group of about fifty people who lived along the Animas River. After a few years, most of these people moved to another location and began construction of their new adobevillage. Because the Puebloan language was not understood by European settlers, they converted to Catholicism and began speaking Spanish. In 1860, most of the original Puebloan residents left for Mexico City when war broke out between that country and Spain over control of California. A few families stayed behind and continued to live among the Mexicans until 1871 when they all returned to their ancient pueblo site near present-day Colorado Springs. Today, about 150 descendants of those original Puebloan colonists live in rural communities throughout western Colorado County and southernmost New Mexico Territory.
