In 1876, a group of men led by John A. Parker founded the town of Parker in what is now Weld County, Colorado. The town was named after Colonel John A. Parker of the United StatesArmy who had fought in Mexico under General Antonio López de Santa Anna. The first settler in the area was George Wessels, who built a log cabin in what is now Parkersburg. Other early settlers were David and Nancy Kapp, John and Esther Hinton, and Amos Richardson. In 1881, two Mormon pioneers from Utah arrived in the area and platted what would become Parkersburg on an alluvial flat above an ancient meadow that lay at the edge of a glacier-covered mountain range. By 1880, there were over fifty people living in Parkersburg with three churches and one school established within its boundaries.
