Parker is a small town located in the San Juan County, Colorado, United States. The population was 927 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Grand Junction metropolitan area. Parker was platted in 1882 by J.D. Park and Wm. Hetzel as a trading post on the Cache Creek Indian Reservation east of present-day Grand Junction. The name "Parker" comes from the Shawnee word "pa-kuh-ler," meaning "place where people gather." The first store in Parker opened in 1892 and was run by Jesse Kippenberger and his brother John Kippenberger. In 1903, Parker became home to one of Colorado's first schools - Central High School (now Parkview Elementary). In 1907, an irrigation canal was built through Parkland Township which increased agricultural production and brought new business to town center; however, when it closed in 1935, most of the town's businesses went out of business including hardware stores, grocery stores, post office, bank (later acquired by First National Bank),auto services and more than 20 saloons/bars which had once been popular hereabouts among miners who used them for socializing before workaday strains led to their closure during Prohibition era prohibition added an element of danger into these days leading to some barroom brawls along these lines ensued with resultant law enforcement issues until such times as prohibition repealed itself via New Deal legislation following World War II bringing about a period of stability characterized by more jobs available after that time although retail trade has since resumed albeit at a much lower scale with most storefronts being replaced by auto dealerships or specialized trucking services chapels have been built along Main Street near park service headquarters providing worship space for local school kids as well as meeting place for civic organizations In 1955 Parker got its own hospital when Rocky Mountain Hospital opened on Seventh Avenue North just south of Main Street and within six years had become one of southern Colorado's largest health care providers serving both rural residents and urbanites the hospital now employs over 350 full-time employees including 300 physicians plus 10 medical assistants In 1961 The University Of Colorado At Boulder opened its doors at what is now CU Health Sciences CenterMain Campus annexing what had been Rocky Mountain Hospital campus In 1969 Aiello’s Liquors moved from downtown Denver to Parker where they remain today operating under license from Sazerac distillery which purchased them back in 1978
