Parker is a small town in Arapaho County, Colorado, United States. The population was 3,851 as of the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern edge of the Rocky Mountains and about two miles east of US Highway 623. The community began as a log cabin settlement named Steele's Station in 1864. In 1870, it became Parker after its founder, John C. Parker, Sr., donated land for its establishment. The original post office was established in 1865 and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1902. In 1876, Parker changed its name to Parkersburg because most people there ceramically Arts and Crafts items such as plates and cups from Scotland. Parker also has an early 20th century post office building that still stands today with a gift shop attached to it which served as a local drop off center for milk delivery to residents during prohibition years (1913-1921). Parker experienced some growth during World War II when thousands of soldiers passed through town on their way to fight in the war overseas. Some businesses survived the war such as American Motors Corporation which opened up a new factory near downtown in 1945; however many others did not have much success due to wartime competition or economic hard times. The first group of white men to set foot in the area that is now Parker, Colorado were members of a wagon train traveling from Missouri to California in 1847. The settlement was named after Capt. John Parker and his party who discovered the area while on their way southward. At first, the settlers lived on horseback, but soon started building homes and businesses using what they found around them. By 1863, Parker had become an important stop on the Pony Express route between Denver and Sacramento. The town's growth continued until it was incorporated as a city in 1907.
