Parker, Colorado is a small town located in Weld County, Colorado. The population was 5,829 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat for Weld County and the largest city in Weld County by population. Parker is known for its annual Balloon Fiesta which takes place in late April or early May. The first settler to live in what is now Parker was James Aiken who arrived in 1859. By 1870, some 50 settlers had moved into the area and it was called "Thevil". In 1872, John Dicken bought land from Aiken and named it Parkersburg after himself. The village of Parkersburg developed around a post office and store on the corner of 15th Street and Dry Gulch Road. A fire destroyed much of downtown Parkersburg on May 6, 1886 while several people were working inside the building. With only four firefighters fighting the blaze, they were able to save most of the buildings including an opera house which still stands today as one of downtown's most important landmarks. In 1907, Drury Motors opened its doors in what is now Downtown Parker with plans to make Parkersburg their leading business district for truck transportation services throughout western Colorado Springs until that company closed its doors in 1951. The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company also made an initial investment here before going out of business a few years later near Interstate 25 and Broadway Boulevard north of downtown parker In 1955 two brothers - Dickenson Manufacturing Company - founded what would become known as Dunsmuir Paper Mills just east of I-25 south of Broadway Boulevard across from National Palace Hotel on Main Street near Elmira College when both companies merged forming Dunsmuir Paper Corporation (DPC) . At that time DPS also became one half owner (along with National Palace Hotel)of Denver Post Newspaper Co., predecessor to current Denver Post Publishing Co., headquartered today at One Pruce Street NW behind US Bank Tower . On January 1st 1960 PCL acquired all assets - liabilities - shares exercised by Dunsmuir Paper Mills shareholders following their merger with DPS which included Anschutz Entertainment Group plc . within that holding company which through its ownership interests controlled Paramount Pictures Corporation (now Comcast), Universal Studios Hollywood Blvd., Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios Incorporated (now 20th Century Fox), Warner Bros.- New Line Cinema Incorporated (now Time Warner) .. These days you can see remnants of Dickenson Manufacturing Company's plant northeast off I-25 between Cherry Creek Parkway South AND Keystone Avenue just east OF University Place
