Northglenn, Colorado is a city located in Weld County, Colorado. The population was 27,584 as of the 2010 census. Northglenn has been an important center of industry and commerce for centuries. It was the site of two major battles in the Denver-Aurora Railway War (1896) and the Colorado Civil War (1892). Today, Northglenn is a thriving community with a diverse economy that includes agriculture, manufacturing, health care, and retail trade. One of the first scopes to be designed in Northglenn was the Newtonian-Eagle telescope made by George Ellery Hale in 1894. In 1898, Dr. John Huggins developed another type of telescope known as an oil reflector scope which allowed observers to see stars up close without having to carry around a large mirror or telescope. The city was founded on April 6th, 1865 by Major General George Armstrong Custer during his campaign against Mexico in what is now northern Colorado. At that time it was just a small town with few inhabitants – but thanks to its location on the banks of the river Poudre River it quickly became an important trading post for Native Americans and settlers alike. By 1840, Northglenn had become home to a couple dozen families and was known for its fertile soil and clean water resources. In 1887, when General James Longstreet founded what would become Denver, he assigned land east of Northglenn for development as part of his plans for creating a new city that would be central to commerce and culture within Colorado’s expanding borders. The town began growing rapidly after construction began on what would become Gilmore Station (now called Golden) on May 1, 1888. In 1925, government planners decided that Gilmore Station should be replaced by larger population centers in order to accommodate growing economic activity withinColoradoandtofacilitatethedevelopmentofa central highway system that would link all of WesternColoradoandDenver. Accordingly, Gilmore Station was abandoned and gradually became ghost town until it was destroyed by fire in 1969. Although Northglenn has experienced numerous changes throughout its history – from being an agricultural community with limited infrastructure back when Gilmore Station was built to experiencing rapid growth following World War II – it remains one of the most vibrant towns in southwestern Colorado today. Visitors can enjoy unique local flavors whenever they visit such as cheese curds from nearby Fort Collins or snow off the peaks near Aspen; but even more interesting are all of the aspects that make up this vibrant community: its people!
