The first European to sight what would become Northglenn was Captain James Cook on his HMS Resolution in 1790 during his third attempt to circumnavigate America. He named it: "Newfoundland" after Prince Edward Island in Canada because he thought he saw a landmass that resembled that island. In 1876, Nelson & Macdonald constructed a flour mill on High Plains Creek south of town; this became one of America's earliest large mills and remains an important part of local life today. In 1907, Stavely Bros., builders of ranches around Greeley, opened a general store here which became one of Greeley's most popular attractions for tourists and locals alike. The first post office here was established on October 8, 1907. Northglenn prospered as an agricultural center before becoming an industrial center with operations such as GEICO (now Nationwide), Pillsbury Doughboy Donuts (now Dunkin' Donuts), Pepsi-Cola bottling plants (PepsiCo/ConAgra) and many other manufacturers over the years until its decline following World War II when heavy industry left for countries such as Japan or China.. During World War II there were severalbombing raids against Northglenn; one took place on December 7th 1944 near Main Street when about 20 railroad cars were destroyed by two bombs dropped from B-29s over Weld County; all but five buildings within 2 miles were destroyed or damaged including Stavely Bros.' General Store which continued to operate as normal despite damage until 1954 when it closed due to lack of demand from customers after being bombed out three times! Post Office #2 reopened on May 1st 1945 with new equipment and served residents until 1957 when it closed again due to low mail volume caused by the war effort elsewhere in Weld County.. In 1949 Northglenn had its first golf course - Harmon Hills Golf Course - built by Bob Harmon who operated a caddy service throughout muchofwestColoradoduringthe1940sand50sfor players at nearby Aspen Meadows Golf Club.. In 1975 Northglenn had its second golf course - Lansdale Country Club - built adjacenttoHarmon HillsGCardinal Roadside park providing Players with championship quality courses within easy reach from home while still maintaining rural atmosphere .. In 2006 LansdaleCountryClubwasacquiredbyTheGolfers Resort Group Incorporation which renamed it Riviera Country Club .. In 2013 RivieraCountryClubbecameTPCNorthGlen ..
