Northglenn, Colorado is a town in Arapaho County, Colorado, United States. The population was 521 at the 2010 census. Northglenn is part of the Denver–Aurora-Lakewood, CO Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town is located on the north side of Northglenn Mountain and east of Golden. The first people to live in what is now Northglenn were white settlers from central Kansas who arrived around 1869. They named the settlement after their father's home place, North Glen in Scotland. For many years the only businesses in town were groceries and general storekeepers. In 1912, a group of men led by businessman George Wirth founded the First National Bank in town. With its establishment came growth for Northglenn as commercial areas sprang up all over Arapaho County including Westminster and Longmont to service First National's customers on Main Street and also Sprague Avenue which became known as "the heart of town." The Second World War brought economic hardship to Northglenn but it persevered with a commitment to education and civic engagement that continues today. In 1951, when Boulder began annexing Arapaho County into its own municipality, Northglenn chose not to join because it felt that annexation would have taken away much needed civic space from its community and potential students at nearby universities. While some residents did choose independence during this time there remain vestiges of community spirit today as evidenced by numerous local festivals such as July 4th parade which features floats made entirely out of recycled materials; artisans market; annual music festival; yearly Harvest Festival; winter carnival; chili cook-off sanctioned by state government affairs committee
