The first settler in the area was Captain John Myrick, who arrived in 1876. He named his location "Northglenn" after his home town of Northampton in England. At that time the only village in Douglas County was located near Denver and its growth led to the construction of several schools and businesses within sight of each other; Northglenn had no school until 1907. The post office at Northglenn first opened on July 1, 1887. In 1907,zonation changed when Arapaho Indian land extending from what is now east Dearborn Avenue to north Main Street was ceded by the tribe to Douglas County for $200 per acre (based on then-current white population). The current day boundaries of Northglenn were laid out as part of this cession. The town's early years were difficult due to lack of available water and transportation; however, through creative problem solving and hard work, it soon became one of the most thriving communities in Douglas County. In 1923, a new dam was built upstream from present-day Northglen Boulevard to provide electrical power for the small towns downstream; this event helped spur development within the town limits and brought about increased commerce and industry including a grocery store/gas station/feed mill on Main Street which continued until 1977 when it went out of business due to competition from larger stores along I-25 south of town. Mallard Dam (now called Glenwood) across South Platte River created water barriers around much of what is now downtown Northglen during 1915 floods which caused severe damage including loss or destructionof many homes and businesses downtown; some examples are: First National Bank (now Burlington Coat Factory), Central Drug Store (later JCPenney), Masonic Temple & Hospital (later known as Century 21), Aurora Savings & Loan Association (now Wells Fargo Bank), and Pawn Shop #1 on Main Street before being torn down by developers in 1978 while still standing today because they could not find a use for it despite its height above river level! During World War II there existed a military airfield adjacent to what is now airport property which servedDouglas County residents as well as other nearby counties.. It closed circa 1945 when all USAAF facilities closed nationwide following Japan's surrender.. Today these remnants are still visible behind bushes off Airport Road just west of I-25A entrance
In the late 1800s, Northglenn was a small farming town which sat on the edge of Colorado's Uncompahgre Plateau. It was well known for its black coal mines, and in particular, its valuable coal that helped power many early businesses in the area. In the early 1900s, Northglenn grew rapidly as a result of new transportation methods and industrial development which had begun to take hold in nearby Aspen and Pueblo. The town reached its peak during World War I when it became one of the largest concentrations of troops stationed in Colorado. After the war, Northglenn declined slowly but steadily until it disappeared completely from view after World War II. Today, there is only a few faint reminders of what once happened here – an old post office building remains standing as do some small homes scattered around town.
