Northglenn is located on State Highway 66 between Pikes Peak to the east and Aspen to the west. It has been home to coal mining for over 100 years and now has a mixed-use development called The Glenwood Village that includes restaurants, shops, and apartments. The first white person to live in what would become Northglenn was John Wesley Powell in 1869. He founded an adobe ranch named "Powell's Ranch" south of present-day Northglenn on private land he acquired from Colter & Co., a mining company active in this region during the late 1800s. Powell also built a adobe castle which still stands today across from his ranch house adjacent to Aspen Valley Park. In 1870, Denver trader George Arapahoe arrived in what is now Northglenn with his family and began trading goods with local farmers and miners until his death in 1872 while exploring northcentral Colorado near Aspen Junction. This area became known as Arapahoe's Roost because it served as a stopping place for stagecoaches carrying passengers betweenDenver and Aspen along State Highway 66 (now I-25). In 1875, gold was discovered at Gold Mine #3 northeast of present-day Keystone off US 50 by James Halliday McGee (1829-1911), one of two men who claimed discovery of gold within two weeks of each other on July 24th, 1865 during an expedition led by Major General Winfield Scott Hancock (1822-1891) northwestward from Telluride via Georgetown Pass into northwestern Kansas Territory (the ' Mormon War'). Improvements made at Gold Mine #3 soon yielded large profits for numerous capitalists interested in getting their hands on this valuable metal but no field discoveries were made until 1886 when William McKinney became president of the United States and ordered USGS geologist Edward Cushman Jr.'s exploration campaign into central Arizona Territory mineralized areas where gold had been found previously including Rushmore Hill prospecting near Flagstaff; Cushman’s report naming these regions “Gold Country” generated much interest among American capitalists including Andrew Carnegie who invested $5 million ($100 million adjusted 2016 dollars) in several companies such as Canadian Pacific Railway Company Limited which organized an drive down Rushmore Hill against strong resistance led by millionaire Clifton Dawson; Dawson lost most of his money but left behind evidence that he had struck it rich when he offered $10 per share for 10 shares of stock representing 2% total holdings original issued! Commercialmining operations ceased around 1911 due largely to new technology developments associated with world war I but black lung disease continuedto affect miners working underground throughout much of1920s through 1950s not caused by modern ventilation systems used today however there have been recent advances in medical care which has helped reduce incidence rates somewhat since then especially among men working long hours below ground . Coal production peaked around 1928 with exports accounting for 55%of revenue however exports declined rapidly following WWIIrenewed competition from oil production . By 1960 Consumption accounted for only 27%of revenue although coal consumption increased steadily thereafter due primarily to residential construction particularly outside town limits . Coal mine closures occurred beginningin 1967 Due mainlyto fire accidents including three major ones: Brushy Mesa mine disaster on January 15th 1966; Sprague Creek mine disaster on April 14th 1971; Foothills West mine accident on May 22nd 1981 ); silver mines closed primarily because technological advancements moved production indoors rather than outdoors where smelting took place leaving residual rock exposed that presented health hazards especiallyodwise exposure during air pollution control measures introduced following WWII .) Today Northglenn functions mostly as a retail center servicing nearby Aspen Highlands ski resort as well as Pikes Peak outdoor recreation area accessed by Interstate 25

The area that now makes up Northglenn was first inhabited by the Anasazi people. In 1862, Captain Edward Fitzgerald explored and named the area Northglenn after his home in Scotland. The town's name comes from the fact that it is located on the north side of what is now called Canon City Creek. In 1888, Northglenn had a population of just over 200 people. By 1912, its population had increased to 1,500 people as a result of the growth of Coal Mines 2 and 3 along Canon City Creek. The mines were responsible for much of the town's development during this time period. The mines closed in 1978 but their impact on Northglenn cannot be overemphasized. Without the mines, there would have been no significant increase in population or economic activity within the town during these years. Today, Northglenn is a small community with a rich history that can be enjoyed by all who visit it. Its many attractions include its unique architecture and history as well as its diverse landscape which includes rolling hills and valley floors stretching to several thousand feet below sea level.
