Northglenn was founded in 1868 as Northglenn Station on the Union Pacific Railroad. The first post office in Northglenn was established in 1870. The name "Northglenn" came from the fact that the station was located beside North Glen Creek and north of Glenwood Springs. A post office called "Glenwood Springs" served until 1907. The first store in Northglenn opened in 1887 and it remained open until 1955. In 1915, a school district was organized and Northglenn became part of it; however, the school district disbanded in 1957 due to budget cuts. In 1941, all but one street in downtown were rebuilt following anearthquake that had struck nearby Glenwood Springs three weeks earlier. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all of it land (1). As of 2009, there were 1,527 people living in town; 514 households, and 316 families residing within city limits (the urban core), while 803 residents lived outside city limits (the rural periphery). Outlying areas include: Gahanna with 342 residents; Pueblo with 2,812 residents; Canon City with 624 residents; Keystone with 704 residents; Eldorado with 344 residents; Garden Valley with 256 residents; and Trinidad with 104Residents
