The Parton brothers started a smelter nearpresent-day Interstate 25 in 1908 and it became one of the largest producers of silver ore in America during the early 20th century. In World War II Northglenn played an important role as one of eight military airfields used by RAF Bomber Command for Operation Crossroads which led to Allied victory over Nazi Germany; the city also hosted several aircraft manufacturing plants including Consolidated Aircraft Corp., Hughes Aircraft Co., Boeing Airplane manufacturing plant No 1 (later known as McDonnell Douglas), Harland & Wolff shipyards and General Electric Company's Northwest Electric Power Plant No 2 (later GE Powertrain) until these were all closed down by 1970s due to competition from electronic equipment manufacturers such as Intel Corporation et al..
