In 1868 Pioneer Place/Norman's Landing became the townsite of Northglenn when Wacoaltoa Township abandoned its villages east of South Broadway and annexed Northern Gateway East from Arapaho Village. The town site name honor Captain George Washington Irving who discovered land that would become Aurora on July 24, 1805 while traveling through this region with members of his exploring party known as "The Explorers." Captain Irving located two small streams which he called "Horseshoe" and "Turtle", which served as boundaries between Norgellan Township (northwest corner) and Wacoaltoa Township (southwest corner). In 1898 development began along what is now Interstate 25 just south of the original town site; this area would become known as Northglenn Heights. When I-25 was realigned in 1990s much of this area came under new jurisdiction including portions north of Utopia Boulevard which formerly lay within Arapaho Indian Reservation lands managed by US Fish & Wildlife Service until 1996 when they were transferred to Navajo Nation control following Resolution 992 from Senate Bill 279 passed by then Speaker Tom Rayburn during the Clinton Administration.).
