The first flashlight designed specifically for use while hunting was the 1871 Browning Automatic Rifle light. This weapon mounted a 20-gauge shotgun barrel and had a lucite crystal lens to allow night vision. The light was powered by an internal battery and could be held in one hand. Throughout the 1800s, hunters used other types of firearms to hunt game such as rifles, shotguns, pistols and even bows. This allowed hunters to track down prey at night without fear of getting lost in dense woods or jungle areas where torches would not have worked well

The incorporation ordinance for Montrose was filed with the state on January 7, 1908. The economy of Montrose has been based primarily on agriculture since its establishment as a town. Today's primary industry is agriculture (primarily cattle). A large portion of this activity takes place within the municipal limits of Montrose; about 60% of all economic activity in town occurs outside those boundaries.

The first Europeans to visit Montrose were fur traders in the late 18th century, and early settlers were men of means who moved westward during the gold rush of 1849. The townsite was platted in 1861 by Major General Edwin V. Stroud and named for him after his home on Montrose Heights in Edinburgh, Scotland. The railroad reached Montrose in 1876, and development accelerated thereafter as businesses grew involved with transportation and mineral resources being found along the route. In 1925, Montrose incorporated as an unincorporated community under the laws of both states; it remained that way until becoming a municipality on January 1, 2009. The population of Montrose has grown steadily since then with more people choosing to live here due to its natural attractions such as skiing and fishing opportunities; however, some businesses remain located within the incorporated town limits for those reasons only
Montrose is located in southern Colorado and is the site of a number ofhistoric events. The town was first settled by pioneers in 1875, and it became an important rail junction during the early days of Colorado Railroad Administration. In 1892, Montrose was named after General John A. Montrose, who had fought in the Mexican-American War and later served as a U.S. Senator from Kansas. The town also played an important role in the construction of Interstate 25, which ran through central Colorado at its inception.
