Montrose was a mining town in the San Miguel Valley of Colorado in 1876. The Montrose Mining and Smelting Company was founded there in 1875 by Uriah Calkins, George W. Shaffer, and others. It produced ore from quartz and other minerals until it closed its doors in 1906. The fortuitous location of Montrose made it an early center for stagecoach travel between Denver and Pueblo. In 1870, the first post office at Montrose was established, serving both towns. By 1880, there were four Masonic Lodges in Montrose alone; they remain active to this day. The first school in Montrose was built on the east side of Clear Creek in 1879-80 by Mrs. Houghton; that building is now used as a church parsonage. In 1886, after years of debate over what should be done with the site of mines abandoned since early 1800s due to lack of profitable gold production (the original claims had been located some 15 miles northeast of present-day Montrose), Congress passed an act creating “Agency Mines” within reach of civilian populations for development without governmental interference or control over resource extraction—a model still followed today for many federal land acquisitions across multiple states and nations. This Act grantedmontrosers such as Calkins/Shaffer their own company ownership titles as well as mineral rights equivalent to those held by government proprietorships (and subject to future disposition based on results of exploration). On July 1st 1906, less than two months after Congress approved the General Land Office's order transferring all remaining non-commercial claims within 100 miles southward along I-25 to the Forest Service so that public access could be provided for Mineral Supply Centers operated under terms set forth therein (later renamed National Park Service), the lastmontrosser died when his load trolley caught fire while crossing Clear Creek near milepost 73 on Ute Pass Road just north of montrossing point (now part of Aspen).

Montrose is a census-designated place in Clear Creek County, Colorado, United States. The population was 1,715 at the 2010 census. The CDP includes the neighborhoods of Montrose Park and Montrose. Montrose was founded in 1872 as a cattle and sheep ranch by George A. Smith and his brother John Teller. It prospered until 1907 when prohibition made it difficult to sell goods without buying alcohol from local dealers. In 1911, the Smith brothers merged their holdings with those of fellow rancher Cecil B. Hinkle to create the newly named Hinkle–Smith Ranch Company. In 1916, these two companies merged again to form the current Monterosse Ranch Company which still maintains its cattle and sheep operations today. The town of Montrose first developed around this ranching industry; it began as a few hundred people living on small farms near the main ranch buildings before growing rapidly into an incorporated municipality in 1915 with a population of 2,500 residents (1,715 today). Male citizens were required to own land outside of town for grazing purposes; female citizens could not vote or hold office within their own community. As part of efforts to improve transportation access outside town, Mayor Samuel Gompers established what is now called Gompers Boulevard in 1922 as a limited-access road leading east from downtown Montrose through agricultural areas adjacent to the ranch properties where most residents livedindauring out their workdays between May 5 and September 15: "a day off work for all" idenitified as " Roy's Day." This program led eventually to other major development decisions such as annexation by neighboring Aurora in 1956; rapid growth after annexation has been due primarily to oil production throughout much of Clear Creek County since that time In recent years,montrosesevelopmenthasbroughtaboutadditionalemploymentinthetownandoutsideofitviajobsinroadsandteamsportssuch ashikingand skiing ().
