The history of expandable mountains in Montrose, Colorado goes back to the early 1800s. The first mountain range in the area was the Rocky Mountains. By 1885, a small ranch known as Rancho Encinal had been founded on what is now called west side of town. The ranching industry grew throughout the late 19th century and into the early 20th century, and by 1915, Encinal had become one of the largest ranches in western Colorado. In 1925, rancher John Wesley Powell became interested in developing an oilfield near Crestone and began exploring possibilities for a drilling rig and landupgrading station at White Sands Pass. In 1929, he leased 4 square miles (10 km²) from the United States government for $5 million dollars with plans to develop it as a national park. The National Park Service was created in 1932 and operated Rancho San Miguel until it was sold to private developers in 1936. During World War II, Encinal served as a training ground for both U.S. military forces and Japanese troops during Operation Iwo Jima and other campaigns in Okinawa. The ranch also housed army barracks during peacetime up until 1951 when they were replaced by motel-style housing units built along Main Street between Roosevelt Boulevard and White Sands Avenue
Montrose is a small town in the U.S. state of Colorado. It is located in Montrose County, about 20 miles (32 km) south of Denver and 25 miles (40 km) east of Grand Junction. As of the 2010 census, its population was 1,521. The ZIP code for Montrose is 80112. The name "Montrose" first appeared on maps in 1876, when it was part of Clear Creek Village and Washakie County.[1] In 1902, residents voted to change the name to Montrose after General George Custer's death at Little Bighorn Battlefield in Montana Territory;[2] however, the town didn't take off until 1912 when local manufacturer John Fenton built a sawmill here and started selling lumber products from his mill site. The post office was established in 1912,[3] and the first store opened in 1915. In 1928, a railroad station was built adjacent to the mill which served as the town's primary transportation hub until 2001 when Interstate 70 replaced it. In 1931, Montrose became one of two towns withinDenver limits that did not go along with annexation by Denver proper; they retained their own governing committee but were considered city residents for all purposes such as taxes and zoning.[4][5][6] In 1984–1985 an effort to annex both towns failed due to strong opposition from residents who wanted their own independent government.[7][8][9][10] In 2002, voters approved an amendment easing annexation procedures which went into effect March 1st that year;[11][12] however this decision was overturned on appeal by a 3-to-1 margin following public protestations from both sides during campaign season.[13] According to The Gazetteer Of Colorado 2008,[14]: "Today’s community began growing up around John Fenton’s sawmill on First Street near I-70 around 1912 when he started shipping logs out here from his other mills."
