Montrose is a small town in Arapaho County, Colorado, United States. The population was 1,569 at the 2010 census. It lies on the south side of Montrose Mountain and includes the hamlet of North Topo. Montrose is part of the Denver-Aurora-Lakewood, CO Metropolitan Statistical Area. Montrose was founded in 1859 by John Montross and his brother Moses as a mining camp for prospectors looking for new goldfields in Arapaho County. The first post office opened in 1861. By 1875,montross had developed a two-story hotel which still stands today; it served as the local government's seat until 1906 when it moved to Aurora. In 1902, Montrose hosted its first international exhibition of modern art, featuring work by American artists such as Edward Munch and Grant Wood. The townsite was platted in 1907 by Jules Ewing with assistance from J C LeRoy who had purchased 3/8 mile (1 km) east of the original site from George Wickersham. With growth in agriculture (the area now known as North Topo) and ranching during World War I, many people left Montrose for better opportunities elsewhere within Arapaho County or outside Colorado altogether; however, many residents returned during and after World War II due to increased employment opportunities available in Rocky Mountain National Park and other areas of Western Colorado. In 1957–58 The Webb Foundation built what is now called "The Lodge", an expensive ($2 million) log cabin complex that became one of the most popular tourist attractions in town; visitors could enjoy furnished rooms with kitchenettes or stay outdoors on a heated porch under grapevine arches near Mirror Lake before dinner at The Lodge's formal dining room overlooking Prospect Hill Gardens where they could watch deer roam free or listen to chamber music played by local musicians nightly inside The Lodge's grand reception hall while enjoying views of Mount Elden across Prospect Valley below In recent years much progress has been made to revitalize downtown Montrose with various events including: an annual arts festival since 2006 headlined by nationally touring artists such as bluegrass legend Budweiser Clydesdales; several large-scale redevelopment projects initiated by city officials directed towards creating more jobs and boosting downtown businesses including - most notably - installation of new streetlights throughout central business district following completion of a $10 million public investment campaign led by Mayor Michael Hancock
