Montrose is a small town in Douglas County, Colorado, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. Montrose is part of the Pueblo–La Jolla, CA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The original inhabitants of Montrose were the Ute people. European settlers first arrived in 1859 and founded Cripple Creek Ranch east of present-day Montrose. In 1865, they named the area "Montrose" after General William Fenton Montrose who had fought for American independence against Mexico. In 1876, Pius IX founded Our Lady's High School in Montrose in memory of his mother Eugenie de Beaufort whose death he had announced on 15 May 1875 while Rome was under attack by French forces led by Napoleon III. Beaufort remains one of America's most popular saints and her feast day is celebrated on 9 October. The post office opened in 1902 and continued to be called "Montrose". It was changed to its current name in 1907 when it became part of the Denver–Aurora duopoly with Alamosa as its second post office. The DuPont company built a chemical plant here in 1911 which operated until 1959; it produced lead acid batteries and other products that made Montrosi one of the largest lead manufacturing centers west of Pennsylvania during World War I and II. Since 1990,montrosi has been home to two high school sports teams: The Hens (girls) and Mavericks (boys). Both teams compete on an 8-team National football league schedule that opens with their season opener on Friday night against Cripple Creek East HS (formerly Columbine Valley HS) at 6 p.m., followed by games against Greeley Central HS (formerly Northglenn HS), Westminster Christian Academy (formerly Pine Ridge CC), Golden Hill HS ( formerly Niwot HS), Thornton Hills JC ( formerly Strongsville Heights JC), Centennial Mesa RSHS/Lincoln Park Jesuit Church Moorpark Meadows

One significant aspect of Montrose's history has been its role as the birthplace of Jim Bowie, who became one of rock music's most iconic figures during the early 1970s through his work as lead singer for The Raconteurs and later as frontman for White Stripes. Montrose also contains two National Historic Landmarks - the Andrewmont House ( Dating from 1872) and Ford’s Theater ( built in 1903).
