Montrose is a small town in Weld County, Colorado, United States. The population was 1,663 at the 2000 census. It lies on the banks of the Animas River and is part of the Denver–Aurora metropolitan area. The first people to live in Montrose were French Canadians who came overland from Quebec in 1849. In 1860, a post office called Montrose was established and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1944. In 1895, miners discovered coal near Montrose and began to come down to work. By 1907, there were 10 businesses in Montrose and $10,000 worth of property value had been invested in mining operations. By 1920, however, allmining had ceased and only a few residences remain today as a result of this industry decline. However, by 1930s new technology had arrived that allowed for large-scale production of oil shale with consequent economic growth for Montrose residents and businesses alike. 3 new companies were founded during this time: Western Shale Resources (later West Texas shale oil), Continental Oil Corporation (later ConocoPhillips), and American Oil Sands Corporation (later APOC). This growth led to increased development around town including the construction of roads, churches/mosques/schools (most notably Our Lady Of Sorrows Catholic School which opened its doors on October 15th 1935), an industrial park adjacent to downtown known as "The Hill", residences for workers at nearby Refinery Row LLC., retail development such as local convenience stores numerous fast food restaurants dotting The streetscape approximately every two blocks northward from Main Street between 30th St./Lake Mead Boulevard & 44th St./Southwest Freeway; while also creating newfound wealth among some residents through real estate values skyrocketing along with associated benefits like access to high quality schools within walking distance or easy access to Interstate 25 should their needs ever require travel outside city limits! Montrose is a small town in Douglas County, Colorado, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is the easternmost community in Douglas County. The first post office in Montrose was established on October 25, 1868, and mail was delivered to it until November 1, 1870. The name of Montrose comes from "Mount Royal" in central Canada which is also where pioneer George Custer died fighting the Sioux Wars. In 1909, Montrose became part of the newly created Douglas County and had its own elected officials until 1912 when county officials were merged with neighboring Arapaho County. The first school for children in Montrose was built in 1903 by Mrs. Hilda Hammons and classes began on September 17th that year. In 1907–08 school district #1 opened up shop for 4 years at 7 West Main Street with 52 students and 30 teachers from 3 schools ( taxing districts #3 & 4). Eventually other towns within the district joined as well including Aspen, Golden and Englewood before disbanding or being merged into new school districts while Montrose remained an independent entity with its own board of trustees until 1959 when it became part of School District 522 which now includes nearby Aspen and Englewood as well as many smaller communities within Douglas County East Side Neighborhoods Coalition Educational District No 2
