Montrose is a small town in Douglas County, Colorado, United States. Its population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Denver-Aurora-Lakewood, CO Metropolitan Statistical Area. Montrose was founded in 1879 by John Montrose and his brother Jameson as a dry goods store on the banks of the Arkansas River. In 1889, Montrose became one of two towns in Douglas County to be incorporated; the other being Centennial City. The first post office opened in 1890 and closed in 1912. It had a population of 597 in 1910 but grew rapidly due to its location along Interstate 25 and access to irrigated agriculture and mining jobs near Aspen and Westminster. The population reached 2,005 by 1920 and 3,021 by 1930. The Montrose Chamber of Commerce organized a Rotary Club which led to growth of industry within town limits including agriculture (including cattle) processing, plastics manufacture, logging (especially pine), manufacturing aviation parts and equipment, trucking services and tourism until World War II when most production shifted towards munitions production or defense subcontracts outside town limits during wartime shortages caused by the war effort. The decline following World War II wasn't as severe as initially thought; however there have been some efforts to revive interest over recent years such as founding an entrepreneurship center in 2009 that overlooks downtown Montrose while also developing new retail space around it with plans for high school graduation ceremonies held inside it every year since then instead of traveling out-of-town for them like they used to do). There has been discussion about annexing neighboring Unincorporated Park Village into town past its current size because its residents are more heavily Democratic than those living within municipal boundaries which could spark annexation proceedings if successful; however no decisions have yet been made about this status quo pending further developments within town boundaries. In 1860, Montrose became part of the newly created Colorado Territory and it remained an agricultural center until the late 1800s.
