The Montrose Rifle and Pistol Club, Inc. was founded in 1901 by Dr. Jesse A. Winchester and Mr. Charles W. Wecker to promote the shooting of firearms for sport and to protect the rights of citizens in Montrose County, Colorado. The club moved its headquarters from Boulder to Montrose in 1912 and continue to operate out of that location today. In 1923, the club purchased a land plot on which they built their current facility - making it one of the first rifle ranges in the United States open to public use. The club has held many annual events such as deer and turkey hunting seasons, target shooting championships, outdoor basketball tournaments, and paintball matches since its inception including compiling a record 9-1 victory over local rival Golden Spike at their annual meet in 2006 In January 2018, after years of planning and fundraising by members of the NRA Rocky Mountain Gun Ranges Committee (RMGC), Montrose Rifle & Pistol Club announced that they will be opening their newest range - an .22LR rifle range with 5 targets - adjacent to RMGC's existing pistol range on State Street in Littleton. This new range is expected to open in early 2019 with additional targets available for purchase through RMGC's online store once it is operational
Montrose is a small town in Southern Colorado located about an hour east of Denver. The population was 2,747 at the 2010 census. Montrose is home to the Montrose Golf Course, a 9-hole golf course that opened in 1907. The town also has a high school (Montrose East), a library (Montrose Community Library), and two parks - one with a playground and one with baseball diamonds. The first Europeans to visit Montrose were Mormons who came overland from Utah in 1829. They named the area "Mexico" because they thought it would be more hospitable than nearby Pueblo which was then under Spanish rule. In 1864, General Kit Carson's column passed through on his way southward across the Rockies and called at Mexico for refreshment before continuing his march westward. When he arrived, Mexican President Agustín Provenzal had just declared war on United States forces under General John Custer so he ordered his troops to shoot at passing American travelers as they crossed the border into Mexico! A group of Americans stumbling upon this event decided to name their new settlement after General Carson's friend and fellow traveler Joshua Hale Smith – hence "Montrose". In 1870, gold was discovered in what is now Monument Valley near where Montrose sits. This led to increased interest in mining in this area, which led to many businesses being founded such as Salina Mines & Lead Company and Excelsior Coal & Iron Company Ltd., both of which operated until 1920 when most of the mines closed due to lack of ore quality or competition from other mines
