Montrose, Colorado is a small town located in the southernmost corner of Rocky Mountain County in the United States. It has a population of just over 630 people as of the 2010 census. The first gun protection history can be traced back to 1881 when Montrose was named after Captain John Montrose, an American hero and scout who fought in the Mexican-American War. In 1892, Captain Montrose's son, Don Montrose, opened a store in town and started selling firearms to residents. The store soon became known as the "Gun Store of the Rockies." In 1903,Captain John Montrose's grandson and namesake, Don John Montrose II, opened another store in town called "The Rifle Shop." This store was situated on Main Street between Elm and Maple Streets. Both stores continued to sell firearms until 1941 when they were combined into one location and renamed "Montroses Firearms & Ammo." During World War II, Don John Montroses Guns & Ammo became one of only a few businesses inColorado that flourished during wartime rationing. Because they had access to government supplied ammunition that was not available to other business owners, DonJohnMontrosesGuns&Ammo was able to remain open during the war years despite being at odds with many other merchants because he knew his product would be safe. After World War II ended,DonJohnMontrosesGuns&Ammo reopened its doors as an ammo shop but also began selling guns again due to increasing demand from customers looking for firearm Protection services. In 1974,DonJohnMontrossesgunsandammo merged with another local gun protection company which had been operating out of an old theater since 1915 called "The Proctor Theatre". That company operated out of this theater until it closed down in 1994 due to financial difficulties. Montrose is located in the Lafayette Hills area of south-central Colorado. The first European to visit Montrose was Spanish explorer Juan Rodriguez de la Roca on July 10, 1540. He named the place "Montrose" after Mount Carmel, in northern Israel. The townspeople of Montrose began to settle there in the 1870s and 1880s. The town name comes from a local Fort Collins farm where settlers gathered for market day. On December 25, 1886, the city of Fort Collins incorporated as a municipal organization within Montrose Township. In 1907, Montrose became home to one of the first schools in southern Colorado when Republicans established a school here among other early political activities in that region. In 1912, an airfield was constructed northwest of town and served as a base for fighter pilots during World War I; it was closed by World War II and today is known as Ellington Field Air Force Base. In 1951, cattle were introduced to the area and quickly became an important part of local economy; however, at some point between then and 1957 goat farming emerged as an important economic activity for residents in Montrose Township specifically and also across southern Colorado generally due to good access to pastures around Keystone Lake nearby. However goats are no longer common or significant parts of village life today due either to changes in climate or human interference with their natural behavior which has made them difficult (if not impossible) to maintain keeping under control
