Montrose, Colorado is a small town located in the Montrose Mountains of eastern Colorado. The population was 668 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fort Collins-Aurora, CO Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first gun magazine in Montrose was founded on May 1, 1892 by Wm. H. Beaumont and G.M. Naylor as the "National Rifle Association Magazine". The first issue featured articles about rifle hunting and shooting competitions from around the United States. In 1902, Montrose's gunsmiths formed an association called "The Arsenal Club" to trade firearms and sell ammunition products. In 1909, members of The Arsenal Club organized a meeting to consider forming a club specifically for pistol shooters, which became known as the "Pistolmen's Protective Association". They voted to form a society with corporate headquarters in Montrose and initial membership capped at 50 men. On October 8th 1912, they moved their corporate offices from downtown Montrose to what is now Third Street South in unincorporated Aurora County outside of Denver because it became more difficult to find local investors willing to finance their project given Aurora County's restrictive land tenure laws at that time (the clubs original location). In 1915-16, World War I interrupted efforts by pistol shooters associations across America to form groups; this led NRA president George Ball to organize a special session of his organization’s board of directors on January 11th 1916 that created an international organization dedicated solely to conservation of firearms resources through collective purchase and storage within national borders; this group became known as “International Arms Control Association” or IACA after its first meeting in Montreal on February 4th 1916.). A second store was built on US Highway 24 east of present day Montrose in 1875 by Ephraim G residue and J T Whitehead from Pueblo City, Colorado Territory (now Park County). In 1898, John Wesley Powell traveled through montrose with his exploration party on his way to explore the peaks of The Rocky Mountains. His diary entry for that year sums up the feeling of awe created by this trip: "It is an enchanting little town situated upon high hills surrounded by beautiful forests." Today many people still live here based on their agriculture or tourism businesses which include restaurants, hotels/motels and gift shops located around old Main Street while also having access to hiking trails leading into the surrounding mountains
