Over time too, Montrose has become known for its unique architecture – most notably its three churches which are listed on National Register of Historic Places – as well as its history which includes serving as both capital city for Weld County (from 1907 until 1912) and host city for the 2004 Olympic Games (when it was also awarded hosting rights). The first settlers to come to Montrose were farmers who had been sent out from Kansas by President Ulysses S. Grant as part of his Reconstruction policy in America. The first post office was established in 1877, and the town name was changed to Montrose in 1886 when it became a territory under Denver Ward Co., one of several such districts created during the territorial period. Montrose's economy has been based on agriculture ever since its founding; early industries included flour milling, cattle drives, wagon transportation, lumber production, dairy products, and tourism. Cottonseed oil production began around 1910 and continues today as a major industry; other important businesses include KFC (now Kentucky Fried Chicken), Big Lots (a discount store chain), UPS (UPS Parcel Service), candy company Hershey’s Chocolate Kisses (now Mars), pharmaceutical company Novartis AG (), retired automobile manufacturer Ford Motor Company (), local radio station KDVR-FM (),and numerous smaller businesses including two banks (). In recent years there have been efforts to revive the local economy with construction projects such as a new high school campus and expansion of city services like water quality testing for schools In addition there has also been development within the town itself such as an aquarium ()
