Montrose is a town in Weld County, Colorado, United States. The population was 1,541 at the 2010 census. Montrose was founded in 1879 by John P. Montrose and his family, who emigrated from Ireland. It became an incorporated town on July 1, 1909. The first post office in Montrose was established on November 15, 1879. The name of the first postmaster was Elisha Waugh. A store and restaurant were built in 1903 by Jno P. Montrose and Fannie Nolen at 7th and Arapahoe Streets; the business remained active until it burned down on May 12, 1906. The second post office opened in 1911 under the name of Greenfield; it closed December 31, 1912 because of term limits set for local officials then ending one year after each new election cycle. The first school in Montrose was built in 1879 by John P. Montrose and his family as a log cabin with six pupils; it served as a day school until 1889 when a frame building replaced it with its present structure which still stands today at 9thStreet and Center Avenue NE (now Cottonwood Place NE). On October 11, 1907 a citizens’ assembly voted to incorporate as an incorporated town; the vote resulted in the Town Council approving the incorporation on October 14th following a meeting held that evening at First Presbyterian Church across from what is now Park Meadows Elementary School (now known as Regency CommonsElementary School). On January 5, 1916 the US military organized an ambulance service called “The Red Cross” to provide medical assistance during World War I through donations received from local businesses and individuals – including individual contributions totaling $1,200 collected by Mrs. Alma Bogan from her bakery across Main Street from where today Park Meadows Elementary School sits (later known as Regency CommonsMiddle School). In 1920-1921 two schools were built: Consolidated High School for boys (now known as Academy) located east of main street near Highway 6 south of Interstate 25 between Horizon Road and Ute Mesa Boulevard while Girls High School (later named North Star) located northwest of main street just northeast of Interstate 25 between Thornton Road and Keystone Lake Boulevard beside what is nowNORTH STAR Middle School (later renamed Alta Vista Christian Academy after Alta Vista Homeowners Association donating land adjacent to north side of I-25). In 1927 only one high school class graduated from Consolidated High School while all other schools had classes overflowing due to lack of space or lack of enrollment so all students transferred to either North Star or Academy which again overflowed into neighboring schools such as Horizon Ridge middle school which also offered classes overflowing into nearby schools until finally California Junior College moved into Building No 4 next door giving rise to today’s Regency CommonsElementarySchool next door (now known as Park MeadowsElementarySchool). In 1932-1933 Josephine Churchill opened her pediatrician office adjacent to North Star Middleschool; this would become Mother Theresa’s Clinic later that same year becoming one of many clinics operated out there throughout history run by women helping others within their own community thereby embodying female empowerment ever since! In 1935montrose voters passed an ordinance allowing men over 21 years old to vote unencumbered thereby paving way for women voting beginning September 8th following passage by state constitutional amendment approved November 3rd ballot measure providing for woman suffrage nationwide! speech given at dedication ceremonies included then Boulder Mayor Topsy Turpin introducing speakeress Mrs .
