Montrose, Colorado is a small town in western Colorado, located on the South Platte River. It was named for John Montrose, an early settler. The first post office in Montrose was established on July 1, 1876. The population of Montrose was 2,611 as of the 2010 census. On July 1, 1876, Montrose's first post office opened with four inhabitants: James Aughton (banking business), William Fenton ( carpentry and joinery), Charles Hatton (farmer) and Andrew Blythe (contractor). The community soon began to grow and by 1907 had a population of 486 residents. In 1912, the railroad arrived in town and quickly made Montrose one of its important stops. Economic prosperity followed as the local cotton industry boomed during the 1920s and 1930s. In recent years however, many aspects of life have changed for Montrose residents including increased competition from nearby cities such as Denver and Aurora; declining economic prospects due to global recession; concerns about environmental degradation from oil spills caused by hydraulic fracturing operations; and increasing noise levels from nearby factories and mills along the south Platte River Valley
Montrose was first settled in 1859 by the Montrose brothers, who named it for George Montrose, a pioneer settler. The town grew rapidly and by 1865 had a population of 1,500 people. In 1876, the Colorado legislature created Montrose as an incorporated village. The community continued to grow and in 1890 had a population of 3,000 people. By 1915, the population had grown to 7,000 people and in 1965 the village became a city.
