Montrose is a small town in Weld County, Colorado, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. Montrose lies on the eastern edge of Monument Valley National Park and is bordered by the towns of Keystone and Northglenn to the south, Loveland to the east, and Centennial to the north. The valley in which Montrose stands was formed during an ice age when glaciers advanced from Canada into what is now southwestern Colorado. The first Europeans to visit Montrose were Spanish explorers in 1814 who named it San Miguel de Allende after one of their ships that had stopped there on its way from Mexico City. In 1828, gold was discovered nearby at Pikes Peak and soon everyone in the area started prospecting for treasure. By 1864,montrose had become a community with an hotel, storehouse and school. But things changed dramatically when General Grant visited the area while campaigning against Andrew Johnson in 1865 and found numerous mines worth millions of dollars waiting to be developed. After his victory over Johnson, Grant ordered allmining operations stopped but this did not stop people from exploration or development; instead most went back into business as original prospectors began buying up more claims throughout southern Colorado Territory until finally settlement by white men began around 1870-71. In order for people living near mining operations not to be directly affected by their work (and also because there was no law governing such activity), many miners put up fences along their properties so that only those who owned land could see inside. This system lasted until 1902 when a geologist named George Skelton noticed someone had built a fence around an old mine near town which he determined must have been abandoned since no ore could be seen inside! In 1902 Elmer Sawtell purchased 624 acres northeast of downtown Montrose from Jepson Copper Mines for $5 per acre ($100 million today).sawtell used this land for farming before developing it into what is now known as Sawtell Ranch.

Montrose emerged as a major center during World War II due to its strategic location within easy reach of Denver and other military installations.
