Steel barrels became more popular because they were stronger and less likely to rust. In 1903, Montrose became the first city in the United States to pass a gun control ordinance that banned handguns from being carried on city streets. This law was called the "Montrose Act." The era of firearms proliferation ended in the 1940s when World War II began and demand for military artillery increased. Gun barrel production stopped after 1945 due to technological advancements that made cannons and rifles much more powerful and reliable. Mount Rushmore is also home to some of the oldest wooden buildings in North America, dating back to around 1800 BCE. In 1895, Jameson & Son Brewing Company opened its doors in Montrose and remains one of town's most important businesses today. Jameson & Sons Brewery produces light beers such as Keystone Light (a white ale), Keystone Gold (a golden ale), Old Style (a lager) and Mirror Pond Pale Ale (a pale ale). Other local businesses that have been influential over the years include The Bank of America, Barnes And Noble bookstore chain, Mesa Arts District shopping mall which includes art galleries, restaurants and nightlife venues such as Magic Gardens Casino Resort and Rockslide Live music venue which opened in 2016 adjacent to Montrose High School campus

The first post office opened in 1871, and soon there were several businesses in operation including a grocery store, barber shop, hotel, doctor's office and more. In 1905, Montrose became a county seat when Gunnison County was organized. The growth of the local economy led to an increase in population and development around town as well as new construction such as a hospital and shopping center. Park Avenue was renamed Pritchard Boulevard after Jens Pritchard who donated land for it and also funded some of the village's infrastructure such as water supply and streetlights. In recent years, Montrose has seen significant redevelopment with several new buildings being built including an elementary school, high school (now called Lone Peak), health clinic (now called Alliance Health) and another shopping center that will be completed next year on Interstate 25 near Interstate 80
