Montrose is a small town in the Clear Creek Valley of southern Colorado. The valley, which stretches for about thirty miles east to west, is named after Montrose Rancho, a Spanish grant dating back to 1812. In the early 1800s, settlers began moving into the area and by 1850 there were over seventy residents living in Montrose. During the late 1800s and early 1900s, firearms became an important part of local culture in Montrose. Many people in this town used firearms to hunt and protect their property from squatters or other outsiders. The first firearm t-shirt was developed in Montrose around 1905. At that time, most people in this community wore clothing that consisted of just underwear and shoes. However, some men started wearing handgun holsters on their hips while hunting large game such as deer or elk. As ammunition prices increased during World War I, many people decided to buy firearms rather than rely on traditional means of defense such as fishing or trapping. Consequently, shotguns became more common among local residents and handguns made up a smaller percentage of overall clothing attire. In 1923, when prohibition began taking hold across much of America, Montrose become one of the first places in Colorado Springs to go dry. This led to a decline in gun ownership within the town but also helped increase gun sales outside of town due to demand from customers who could no longer purchase weapons anyhow

Montrose is a small city in southern Colorado, United States. The population was 9,866 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Denver-Aurora-Boulder metropolitan area. The first Europeans to enter what is now Montrose were fur traders and travelers who explored the region during the 18th century. In 1859, prospectors discovered coal and oil shale near present day Montrose. The town started developing rapidly due to this finds; by 1870,montrose had a Post Office and two hotels, as well as stores, churches, and a school. In 1875, silver was discovered in nearby Gunnison County; this led to increased development in Montrose as mines were opened up around the county seat of Gunnison Springs. In 1890s and 1900s many new homes were built in Montrose because of its natural resources (coal and oil shale). By 1910 there were over 100 businesses in downtown Montrose with an average size of 10×10 feet (3x3 meters). Today's economy is based on tourism related industries such as fly fishing, hiking/riding trails, and mineral exploration. Montroses original name was "Gunnison". It was changed to "Montrose" after local investors purchased land east of Gunnison Creek that extended into Gunnison County from Johnson & Johnson Oil Company property west of Aspen Avenue. The City Council voted unanimously on November 3rd 1935 to change the name to honor James Wickersham Montgomery who served three terms as Mayor from 1926 until his death in 1937; also note that it may be coincidence but Mr Montgomery also had 2 brothers named James Wickersham who both served terms on council (1926-1937)
