Montrose is a census-designated place in Jefferson County, Colorado, United States. The population was 6,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Denver–Aurora–Lakewood Metropolitan Statistical Area. Montrose was created in 1907 when a group of farmers and ranchers pooled their resources to purchase 640 acres (248 ha) of land east of the Continental Divide. Montrose's first house was built on what is now Main Street and it became an important stop for travelers on their way to Aspen and Vail. By 1954, Montrose had a post office, school, gas station, and two churches—First Baptist and Methodist—all located on Main Street between Ulysses Road and Park Boulevard. In 1957,montrose annexed 2 square miles (4 km2) of Jefferson County to its limits. The area that makes up Montrose today has been settled by humans since Prehistoric times. A pictograph from about 10,000 years ago depicts people wearing animal skins as clothing and hunting game with bows and arrows. The first evidence of human habitation in this area comes from three graves found near Aspen in 1879 which have been dated back to about 1400 BC according to radiocarbon dating methods used at that time. During the Late Woodland period (approximately 4500 BC – AD 1100), massacres took place throughout most or all of central Colorado due to warfare between various cultures including those from the northcentral Rockies such as the Athabascan People who occupied what is now eastern Washington state; these groups killed one another primarily over food sources or competition for territory or trade goods like pottery shards discovered at sites along Interstate 25 near Telluride National Park today testify this history Additionally during this time many Native Americans also migrated down into present day Colorado Springs where they joined other indigenous groups looking for new lands as Spain began developing its possessions along the American continent Spanish settlements were founded throughout North America but were quickly abandoned because there wasn't enough available land For more than 300 years no European settlers came through Jefferson County until 1865 when gold was discovered at Siphoning Creek outside town Limits fortifying Denverites against possible Indian attack This event led directly to Mexico becoming interested in controlling US West Bank land ceding it back to Britain via Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo After much debate both sides agreed upon General John Custer’s march into Mexico City parade July 1876 which resulted in Ulysses S Grant being elected President With George Armstrong Clark taking command General Crook pushed south towards Juarez who surrendered On November 15th Mexican general Antonio López de Santa Anna marched his army towards our towns limits resulting in skirmishes with small forces federal troops withdrew leaving behind 400 soldiers dead plus 1 cannonball hole through Craig Ranch contemporary reports indicate that approximately 60%+of men women children Romero family lost everything during battle including cattle husband father & 5 kids any remaining livestock turned over by Santa Anna Returned home December 9 1880 after 3 months wandering lost 7 days finally reached Baker Gulchposting Station January 131881 They eventually arrived safe & sound within 24 hrs w/ some supplies just before winter started Some think they may have starved out while others say they might have crossed mountain passes undetected cutoff points mark line between modern day Colo & Utah so no reliable information exists One account suggests that Massacre happened due To Indians raiding outfitters' camps situated around present day Brownfield ranch late 1800s More recently several families moved onto large piece o property which forms eastern boundary o current city Limits
