Montrose is a small town in San Miguel County, Colorado, United States. The population was 1,621 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern edge of the San Miguel Mountains and has a ZIP code 82006. Montrose is part of the Denver-Aurora-Lakewood, CO Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in what is now Montrose were Paiutes who called it "Nahua" meaning "place where there are trees." The white man first came to this area in 1869 when he traveled through San Miguel County looking for new land to sell. He found a piece of land that would become Montrose and named it after his friend General James A. Garfield who had died during the Mexican–American War. In 1876, John Denny founded the town of Aurora and laid out its streets and built some homes around what would become Montrose. This was also when gold was discovered in Colorado Springs about 30 miles east of Montrose. In 1907, J.H Gillespie founded Gillespie Farms which became one of the largest vegetable growers in Colorado before selling it to Monsanto in 1978 for $1 million$. After years of decline due to changing economic conditions and competition from other agricultural producers, Gillespie Farms reopened as an organic farm in 2001 with help from local environmentalists and community members working together Montrose's current name comes from Harry Gates who donated 4 acres (1 km²) near downtown on which both city hall and First Congregational Church stand today In 1954, Rufus Witherspoon donated 20 acres (8 ha) northeast of town center which became known as Gateway Park In 1965 Vista resident Donny Ladd donated 10 acres (4 ha), southeast of Gateway Park to create Thornton Highlands Park which contains hiking trails leading into several montane valleys including North America's second highest peak at 14,259 feet (4200 m). Once again with community supportGateway Park was renamed Montrose Open Space Preserve in 1984 after Mayor Dick Melvin turned down a proposal by nearby Commerce City for an open space park that would have included Keystone Lake
