Loveland, Colorado is a small town located in the southeastern corner of Colorado. It has a rich history that began with the development of the railroad. In 1905, Loveland was built as a station on theDenver-Aurora Railway. The town gradually grew and by 1914 had become an important transportation center. The first post office in Loveland opened in 1916. In 1928, Loveland became home to one of the first optical businesses in America when Harry Ayer opened his store at 4th and Market Streets. Ayer became known for his innovative products and sold items such as telescopes, binoculars, microscopes, and other optical equipment. His store was eventually succeeded by Wernher von Braun's company Von Braun Optical Corporation which continued to sell optical products until it merged with Raytheon in 1984. Loveland is a town in Weld County, Colorado, United States. The population was 15,499 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Denver-Aurora-Boulder metropolitan area. Loveland lies on the eastern edge of the Rocky Mountains and has a Elevation of 4,471 feet (1,362 m). The town was founded in 1876 bylovers of natural beauty and laid out according to a plan devised by Major George Mather. A post office was established in 1877, and growth continued until it reached its peak in 1920 with 24,000 residents. However, during World War II Loveland lost much of its identity as its economy shifted towards munitions manufacturing. In 1949 it became an annex to Aurora. The first frame courthouse in Colorado was built in Loveland between 1886 and 1889 by Judge James Boggs and later moved to Aurora; it burned down in 1893. A second courthouse was erected across from the first between 1907 and 1912 by contractor C H Morse & Son under the direction of Mayor John Witherspoon Sr.. That courthouse also burned down but was replaced by what is now First Baptist Church when that building opened in 1912. In 1916 Loveland voters approved a proposal to annex nearby Pueblo into Weld County along with approval for annexation from Asotin County; this annexation created new towns named Estes Park (1916), Broome (1917), Golden (1918), Parker (1920), Thornton(1921), Lamar(1922) and Arvada (1925). It wasn’t until 1956 that Loveland officially became an incorporated municipality with its own government when it annexed Pueblo East again along with other villages within Weld County including Auraria Township which had been merged into Aurora earlier that year.
