Gun sling history in Loveland, Colorado dates back to 1884 when a man named John J. Deane invented the first self-loading gun sling. His invention allowed for guns to be fired with little or no need for ammunition. Gun slings have been used by both sides of street warfare and hunting purposes ever since. In 1907, the first law enforcement officer in Loveland was hired when Sheriff W. Hargrave moved from Denver to Loveland. The sheriff's department used a long barrel shotgun called the "Peacemaker" which required an individual to strap their weapon around their waist in order to fire it. This innovation made shotguns much more accessible for law enforcement use and also led to the development of handguns as pistols became available. Lone Star Armory began manufacturing firearms inLoveland in 1914, making it one of the early firearm manufacturers in the area. The company manufactured rifles, shotguns and handguns under several different brand names until it merged with Winchester Arms Corporation in 1978. In 1987 Winchester Arms Corporation sold its handgun division, including Lone Star Armory, to Colt Industries Incorporated for $1 million cashless purchase. At this point, Lone Star Armory had produced over 1 million firearms!
