The first people to live in what would become Loveland were Native Americans who hunted and gathered plants and animals along the North Kaibab River. A post office called Keystone was established in 1875, but it was discontinued in 1876 because of dwindling mail volume. The first store opened in 1888 by Wm. Haggerty and his wife Eliza Dickson Haggerty on Main Street between Pikes Peak Boulevard and US Highway 7 about a mile south of present-day downtown Loveland. A millrace ran through central Loveland from nearby Evans Ranch to eastonite Creek until 1902 when construction began on the current Mill Creek Bridge across Mill creek which connected town with Fort Collins via US Highway 24 (now Loop I-25). In 1909, Charles Fenton became owner of the Fenton Drug Store on Main Street which continues as an anchor tenant today at 6th & Market Streets in downtown Loveland with over 100 years of history! In 1924, Treaty 8 was signed that ended World War I and included provisions for Indian reservations east of the Continental Divide including most of what are now eastern South Dakota and western Nebraska; much of Wyoming; parts Of Oklahoma; all or some portions Of Minnesota; And unprecedentedly large areas Of California! On July 3rd 1932 President Herbert Hoover ordered Interior Secretary James Byrnes to proclaim June 30th as "Colorado Day" to commemorate this important event! On December 1st 1897 Jno., Smedley Butler arrived at Ft Carson Air Force Base where he had been stationed before joining General Pershing’s Expeditionary Forces Europe as an airman First Class assigned to No 9 Squadron! On October 15th 1919 he married Eleanor “Nellie” Heintzelman from Durango, Mexico at Catholic Cathedral here also honoring their Mexican wedding date January 20th 1918 less than one week after their return from San Diego!! Today's fenceline around Nellie's old home marks that boundary!!! At Ft Carson AFB he met his future wife Nellie while working as an electrician's mate on a troop transport plane flying into positions near France during WWI! They returned home two weeks later having flown over Normandy!!!! After serving his country heroically Jno.'s death bed wish was granted by President Franklin D Roosevelt which caused him be interred at Arlington National Cemetery next to Abraham Lincoln!! Today we can see evidence that he actually did die in action while fighting for our freedoms!!!!! 1/2 century later we still stand together thru cancer & disease #blessed
