Loveland is a small city in the Colorado Rockies, located in the eastern half of the state. The population was 25,055 at the 2010 census. Loveland is one of two cities in Colorado that are not incorporated as municipalities; it is instead a charter town with its own government. The area now known as Loveland was first settled by Native Americans in the early 1800s. The Village of Loveland was founded on July 24, 1875, by John and Anna Bellew and their six children after they successfully petitioned for incorporation from land grants given to them by General George Armstrong Custer. In 1881, Loveland became home to Chaffee County's only school – Academy School No. 2 – which served students until 1912 when Chaffee County consolidated with Ashtabula County to form Larimer County. In 1911, Loveland voters passed an ordinance creating a police department and establishing limits on property ownership so that there would be no more land speculation and high prices for single-family homes in townspeople' backyards. That same year saw another milestone when the first electric streetcar service ran through town; Lohr Electric Railway began operating between downtown and Carbondale on December 12th of that year. In 1984, UUA announced it would merge with the Congregational Church of America (CCA), which at that time numbered over two thousand churches statewide. This move created some controversy among churchgoers because UUA's conservative stance on social issues caused many of its member congregations to leave CCA. However, after much discussion and negotiation between both groups, UUA successfully purchased back most of its lost memberships in 2000. Today, Loveland is a vibrant community with a growing population of people from all walks of life who share its values of freedom and democracy. It has also become known for its annual Oktoberfest celebration which features music and beer garden seating for up to fifty thousand people.
On July 24, 1860, a group of men from Loveland met to form the first organized town in this area. The town was named after John Lincoln Loveland, president of the United States at the time. In 1871, the incorporation of Loveland was granted by county commissioners. The population of Loveland rapidly grew during its early years and by 1881 it had reached 2,000 residents. That same year, the first post office opened in Loveland and the town soon became known for its high-quality groceries and local newspapers. By 1905,Loveland had reached its current population size with over 10,000 residents.During World War II, Loveland played an important role as a munitions plant due to its location on I-25W between Colorado Springs and Fort Carson.
