Louisville, Colorado is an unincorporated community in Arapaho County, Colorado, United States. The population was 2 at the 2010 census. It lies east of the Animas River and west of the Animas- uranium mine. The first settlers in this area were hunters who traveled down the Arkansas River to hunt elk and deer. In 1859, J.P. Hargrave settled a ranch on what is now Coal Creek near Louisville in what is now Arapaho County. This ranch became known as Hargrave's Ranch because it was run by John P. Hargrave and his descendants until 1919 when it passed to the Fenton family. In 1902, coal mining began in this area and soon miners turned out of Louisville into Coalville to find other parts of Colorado richer with coal seams but they never really left until after World War II when a new generation of miners discovered uranium deposits in nearby Mesa Verde National Park which led to Louisville becoming one of the most important uranium towns in America. Today, Louisville is an agricultural town with many businesses related to agriculture including chicken farms, truck stop restaurants, wineries and blacksmiths shops etc., but also some smaller businesses that have been here for years like T-shirt mills or fabric stores etc.; all these small businesses are situated around Main Street which runs along either side of the Animas River between Boulder and Lafayette Streets (see map).
The area now known as Louisville, Colorado was first settled by the Cheyenne in 1859. The town was named for General James H. Lane, who fought in the Mexican-American War. The town began to grow rapidly after the construction of a rail line between Denver and Fort Collins in 1876. By 1887, Louisville had a population of 10,000 people. The region became an agricultural center due to its location near the eastern edge of what is now Fountain Hills and Golden Valley. In 1924, Louisville became an urban community when it was merged with Golden Valley to form the city of Golden Valley.
