In 1859, the first white men set foot in what is now Louisville, Colorado. The area was part of the Mexican land grant Rancho Cahuilla to José Maria Guerra. In 1863, James W. McNaught arrived in Kentucky with his family and homesteaded the old cattle ranch called White Sands about six miles east of present-day Louisville. By 1865, McNaught had built a small adobe cabin on a bluff overlooking the confluence of Clear Creek and Arkansas River. Two years later he started another small ranch about seven miles west of present-day Louisville on the banks of Hackberry Creek. In 1870, John Sargent from nearby Canon City homesteaded a piece of land that included what is now eastern Louisville and western Jefferson County. The first post office in what is now Jefferson County was established at Independence in 1872 by A. B.. Hutton with two mail sacks delivered each week to an address in Canon City. It was moved to Louisville in 1876 when it opened under Postmaster General James Giddings Morton as part of a larger system change that eliminated duplicate services across county lines
