On October 5th 1913 General Louisville received orders from President Taft to move his command eastward along Interstate 25 so that they would not become embroiled in combat with Spain during World War I In 1916, after years of planning and engineering work by local entrepreneurs such as George Prentice and Milton Minor, Interstate 25 became real after sections were constructed concurrent with US Highway 8 through present day Lafayette In 1927 Kentucky Avenue became Jefferson Street which ran between Centennial Boulevard (now First Avenue) westbound and Main Street southbound . This street name change coincided with Kentucky Avenue becoming an arterial highway connecting all partsof Lafayette including Georgetown University where General JHL had established himself as chancellor prior to his departure for Europe In 1931 US Route 287 bypassed downtown Lafayette followingpresent day Elmira Road eastbound while US Route 285 continued northward concurrently providing accessto Institutional Drive (current Broadway). At this time only two blocks remainedof present day Jefferson Street between Centennial Boulevard (now First Avenue) westboundand Main Street southbound .
