Louisville, Colorado is a small town located in the Rocky Mountains of western Colorado. The population was 7,813 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Metro Denver area. The name comes from Old French Louvain (from Latin Laudanum), meaning "lovely valley". The first Europeans to visit what is now Louisville were trappers and fur traders who came through the area during the 18th century. In 1879, James Wetherbee discovered gold in what is now eastern Kentucky while exploring for mineral veins near Telluride, Kansas. This led to Wetherbee's claim to title over all of eastern Colorado and west-central Utah Territory including present-day Louisville, Colorado. The discovery stimulated prospecting and mining activity throughout much of western Colorado until World War II when most mining stopped because of rationing by the United States government. In 1916, president Woodrow Wilson established an internment camp at Ft. Lyon in northeastern Arizona for Japanese Americans during World War I; this camp was later renamed Camp Douglas after General Douglas MacArthur who fought in Europe during that war. The city proper was founded on July 1, 1907 by Jules Ault as an agricultural center for growing corn and other crops on land owned by Colonel George HargraveWhitehurst. The names given to early neighborhoods include Hillcrest (1920-1924) and Highlands (1927). Many people moved into these neighborhoods before they were named after important civic leaders or landmarks such as University Park Boulevard became known as State Street within a few years following its designation as a main thoroughfare running through downtown Louisville after coming under city control in 1928; it remains one of several streets still called State today despite no longer functioning as such due to rapid growth around it since then (see below). A new courthouse building was completed in 1926 which served as both Government House until 1933 when it was replaced by the current courthouse complex which includes a jail, police department headquarters and courtrooms/museums along with twoaserve public works buildings: one housing fire engines and another housing emergency services vehicles used during various natural disasters such as earthquakes or floods; both structures are now part of the adjacent limestone recreation ground known locally simply as "the Courthouse Grounds." Of note are also three Renaissance Revival style school buildings erected between 1915-1916 on Main Street east of Government House - these have been demolished but their foundations remain visible beneathgrowth nearby; one may represent Post Road's earliest example if not actually built earlier than that date . Another notable early structure associated with Louisville's growth was First National Bank & Trust Company Building at Third Avenue southwest corner Justus Street which served from 1909 until 1955 when it burned down; this building has been subject to several proposals for redevelopment over time including being converted into luxury condos currently under way opposite its original site next door though none have yet materialized
