The Longmont area has been inhabited for more than 10,000 years and its name comes from a French word meaning "vale of long green grasses." The first Europeans to visit Longmont were fur traders and missionaries who arrived in 1821. They named their new settlement after a valley in France where they had been exploring for years. By 1825, there were over 60 people living in Longmont. In 1828, local residents erected a wooden stockade around their new town because they fear that Indians would attack it if they didn't have something to protect themselves against them. In 1830, two men named John Hickey and James McNulty founded what would become Denver. Hickey became proprietor of all land within modern-day Denver on which he built his house adjacent to what is now Western Boulevard (now South Broadway). McNulty also started building homes near what is now Main Street in present-dayLongmont. In 1836, both men sold their holdings in Denver to another man named Isaac Barnette for $1 million dollars ($100 million today). Barnette renamed his new settlement Fort Collins after himself and donated all of his belongings—including his home—to Longmont so that it could gain access to education and trade opportunities unavailable outside of Denver at that time. The growth of Fort Collins led to an increase in traffic through Longmont so much so that streets were already being called " avenues" as early as 1840! By 1850, there were over 200 residents living in Fort Collins alone while only 10 people lived in Longmountain Village; however, by 1860 those numbers had increased To 350 residents with 30 businesses! Growth continued until 1870 when prices for goods shipped out via wagon roads began dropping significantly due à increasing rail transportation options available throughout North America! This usheredin a period during whichFortCollins became an important shipping center for goods moving across North America! During this time period agricultural production also grew significantly as settlers turned their attention towards raising crops rather than hunting game or gathering resources; this led eventually to livestock ranching becoming an important industry hereabouts! After several decades of growth and industrialization (1890s thru 1920s), many small businesses closed up shop during this time due à lack of competition from larger companies; however some did manage stay open such as J & C Steinhard’s grocery store which continues operating currently under different ownership since 1978! gradual suburban sprawl beginning occurring throughout portions Of Colorado following World War II resulted In significant increases In population density making urban areas increasingly difficult or impossibleTo maintain without major contributions From private citizens/donors etc…..
