The original downtown business district around Main Street and South First Avenue remains much as it did 100 years ago; however, many other streets have been renamed or changed since then - some of which are still familiar to residents today: North Second Avenue has been renamed Park Boulevard since 2003; South First Avenue has been renamed Market Street since 2007; Third Street has been renamed Broadway since 2006; Seventh Avenue has been renamed Houston Street since 2007; and so on! Today's economy depends largely on natural resources such as oil and gas exploration, manufacturing (including aircraft parts), tourism (particularly outdoors activities), and agriculture - all of which have produced strong jobs throughout recent decades despite changing consumer preferences. Longmont is a city in Adams County, Colorado, United States. The population was 24,059 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Denver–Aurora-Lakewood-Denver metropolitan area. The first inhabitants of Longmont were the Utes who arrived in 1859. They built Fort Douglas on the east side of what is now downtown Longmont and named it for General John A. Fremont because he had routed an attack on their reservation by Native Americans near this location two years earlier. In 1867, Brigham Young founded the LDS Church here and called Longmont The Great Temple Valley after his temple located in Provo, Utah. The Mormon pioneers brought with them livestock, crops, tools and other items that they stored away in abandoned mines and hills around Longmont for future settlers to find and extract gold or silver from. For many years there was no metal available to be extracted from these mines so the town diversified its economy by manufacturing goods such as cannons, spoons, hats and saddles until assay mills became available in earnest during World War II when producers turned to metal production as a wartime need rather than relysolely on farming products which are naturally corroded by elements such as salt air). In 1907 founder Leland Stanford bought 5500 acres (2 km²) of land southeast of town along Fountain Creek for $1 million dollars; he named it "Stanford Ranch" after one of his associates from California's Gold Rush days - George Hennepin (1802-1868). When oil discoveries were made at Cherry Hills and Park City north of Longmont in 1908–09 however Girdler leased land adjacent to Stanford Ranch for shale oil production; development accelerated quickly due to increased competition from Texas interests seeking leasehold rights for similar properties within easy access to interstate highways running through those regions including Aspen and Boulder. When Stanley passed away four years later his son William Randolph Hearst took over control of Hearst Oil Company which soon developed into one of America's most powerful energy companies; under Hearst sponsorship local artesian wells began producing natural gas which provided power for early homespun textile mills owner Wm Fenton constructed between 1915-1916 also known as Fenton Dam No 1), providing waterpower generation capacity not only for Longmont but also South Park Village onthe creek just upstream ;( largely thanks to400 workers recruited by Northland Hydroelectric Power Company) An additional 100 head recruited during construction management & maintenance work associated with enlarging Erie Canal towpath thru town beginning 1945 thru 1947
The first Europeans to set foot on what is now Longmont, Colorado were Spanish conquistadors in the 16th century. In 1824, a group of men led by Major General John C. Fremont explored and claimed the area for the United States. The town was founded in 1827 by Captain James H. Walker and named after General Fremont. The first school in the town was built in 1829 and the first post office was established in 1831. The town experienced some growth during its early years but declined after 1850 when gold discoveries began to appear in nearby Rocky Mountains towns. By 1870, Longmont had shrunk to just a few hundred residents and its current form emerged around that time as a result of waves of immigration from New Mexico and southern California during the late 19th century.
