Longmont is a city in the U.S. state of Colorado, and the county seat of Longmont County. The population was 25,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Denver–Aurora-Lakewood Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to visit what is now Longmont was Spanish explorer Juan Rodríguez Caballero on November 15, 1795. He named it "Misiones" ( Missions). In 1876, gold prospectors discovered rich deposits of gold and silver near where Longmont now stands. The area became known as "The Gold Rush". Mining operations continued until 1933 when production ceased due to World War II shortages of metals such as copper and lead. From its beginnings as a small frontier town, Longmont has grown into one of the most economically active communities in Rocky Mountain National Park with an intense focus on outdoor recreation including skiing, snowboarding, fishing, hiking and camping; concluding with world-renowned concerts at The Pepsi Center during summer months. One reason for this growth isLongmont's location at the crossroads of three major east-west routes: I-25 (the main north/south route through Denver), US 36 (the main east/west route) and CO 24 (a short stretch between I-25 and US 36). Additionally, several high schools in the city are close to Interstate 25 so that students can easily access downtown areas without having to go out into rural or suburban neighborhoods

The history of Longmont can be traced back to 1867 when a small farming community called "Milton" was founded by farmers from Illinois on the east side of the Animas River adjacent to what is now downtown Longmont. Milton grew slowly until it had a population of about 100 residents in 1870 when it became an incorporated city under state law that allowed for such entities within any county in Colorado without having to apply to each individual county. In 1893, after years of growth and transformation due to annexation by other municipalities (e.g., Aurora), incorporation as an independent city marked another major milestone for Longmont as it emerged as one of Colorado's most vibrant communities with more than 10,000 residents by 1910 – making it one of only two cities in the state with more than 10,000 citizens (the other being Fort Collins). Since then, Longmont has continued its rapid growth both internally and externally while maintaining its proud public servant tradition including numerous contributions to both local and statewide causes through service on boards, commissions and committees throughout our hometown – all while working hard every day to make life better for everyone we know and love here!
The city of Longmont was founded in 1868 by surveyors on the east side of the Animas River. The name "Longmont" is taken from a local mountain, Mount Loveland. After years of growth and development, Longmont became an incorporated city in 1902. In 1968, it annexed the neighboring town of Lafayette.
