In 1896 James Auctions Inc., one of Denver's earliest auctioneers and a partner with Purdy & Waddell for more than fifty years until his death in 1910 (James Auctions still remains one of Denver's largest retail customers), moved its operations to what is now Larimer Square Shopping Center from their original location at Fourth and Welton Streets due to growth within the city limits which limited available space for their business within walking distance for most citizens thus limiting potential buyers' access to their wares while also opening up competition among other local merchants who were starting businesses around this time period who could not easily expand into new areas if they did not have acreage or if they could only do so under terms given by City Council regulation (i.e., no increase in rent). In 1898 Storefront No 2 belonging to JF Bairdon - an early resident/operator of what would become known as "Bairdons Trading Post" - caught fire resulting in extensive damage with loss of contents valued at $1,500 including 3 pistols which were worth $2 each when new; all but one firearm soldered back together again after being repaired with iron wire netting using salvaged parts from another damaged storeroom elsewhere on 4th Street near 17th Avenue) This storefront served as a model for many future stores throughout downtown area becoming fixtures over time including: First National Bank Building constructed 1917 – currently used by Overland Insurance Company as well as several restaurants located there such as Denny's Restaurant since 1978 Second National Bank building constructed 1923 – currently occupied by Home Depot across from athletic fields across from library Third National Bank building constructed 1927 – presently occupied by Allstate Insurance Company Fourth & Welton Streets 1893 – now Larimer Square Shopping Center
