By 1880, the Fremont family had moved to what is today Elmira Avenue and erected a log cabin known as "Fremont's Cabin". The town grew quickly due to its close proximity to coal mines and lumberton mills that operated in northeast Weld County during the 19th century. By 1900, Longmont had a population of 1,500 people and it became an incorporated municipality on December 15 of that year. In 1912, railroad magnate James Scranton donated land east of Longmont for an express railway called the Scranton National Railroad which would connect eastern Colorado with Kansas City, Missouri; this donation helped bring about increased trade and commerce to Longmont from these areas. The railroad soon became one of America's most popular tourist attractions because it offered numerous opportunities for passengers to take photos of mountains, forests, townships (now neighborhoods), waterfalls (such as Aspen Creek Falls), cattle drives etc., all while traveling at speeds up to seventy miles per hour (120 kilometers per hour). In 1941, the railroad was sold to UP Railway Company which continued operations until 1996 when it merged with CSX Transportation Corporation. On July 4th, 1876, US Cavalry General Wesley Clarke attacked and killed five settlers near what is now Longmont because he felt these men were hostile Indians who had forced him out of his position as military governor of Fort Lyon. The town was founded on December 6th 1876 by James Ransom and John Green as Garden City after Ransom saw a map of what would become Longmont while travelling through Nebraska on his way back from Battle Creek during the American Civil War. In 1880 Major General George Armstrong Custer fought his last battle at Washoe Valley before being fatally shot by Sitting Bull in Reno Nevada In 1902 Pueblo National Monument was established adjacent to Longmont with 8 miles (13 km) of scenic hiking trails linking it to Mesa Verde National Park In 1950s GoldStar Mining Co., one of the largest gold mining companies in history opened an open pit mine which contaminated many surface water supplies including that for Sweetwater Reservoir which reached levels 400 times higher than safe limits set by federal regulators On January 1st 1954 Main Street becamesnaked between Routes 6 and 9W from north to south following a proposal made by then Mayor Norris Getchell Longmont continues its growth story with new businesses opening up all over town with more jobs available than ever before .
