Longmont is a town in County[2] Weld, Colorado, United States. The population was 9,869 at the 2010 census. The name of the town comes from "Longhorn" which means a cattle ram. The first settler in what is now Longmont arrived in 1867 and named it after his home town of Loughborough, England. In 1870, James Hahn and twenty others founded the towns of Arapahoe and Longmont as places to farm land that had been bought by ranchers from Mexico during the Mexican–American War. In 1872, James Hahn donated land for a public school and laid out streets. By 1881, Longmont had a post office, railroad depot and two churches. In 1895, when Colorado became an state, Longmont voted to become its capital city; however Arapahoe remained its interim capital until 1903 due to its smaller population size. On July 1st of that year – four years after becoming capital – Longmont adopted its current name of “Longmont” with full municipal status under the new Constitution of Colorado (Article XII). In 1907-08 Mayor Harry Breslin led an effort to improve transportation along US Highway 6 by building a road through the mountains from Loveland to Montrose via Asotin Pass and Park City Summit among other projects; this improved travel options for residents and businesses near downtown Longmont as well as links into Denver farther eastward on I-25. This period also saw advances in plumbing/heating technology which allowed businesses such as Jiffy Lube (now Lowe's) to open up shop within walking distance of residents instead of having their service transported long distances like it used to be
