Witherspoon had purchased a lock manufactory located on the banks of the Arkansas River in Lyons County earlier that year from local entrepreneur James Aiken. The factory produced shotguns and pistols using traditional methods such as hand forging and die casting alongside more recent production methods such as 3D printing for handgunlocks and key caps. By 1890, the Lyons Gun & Knife Factory had become one of the leading manufacturers of gun locks in America; it was also responsible for introducing many of Longmont's early commercial businesses including its first post office (1891), bank (1892), livery stable (1893), grocery store (1901), hotel (1902), mutual aid society (1907), museum (1910). In 1915, the factory merged with nearby Sturtevant Locksmiths Inc.; this led to an increase in competition amongLock manufacturers; however, LyonsGun & KnifeFactory continued to be a major player until its closure in 1951.
