Mrs. Custer had been involved with many social activities throughout her life, including working as secretary to Judge Willis Hayden during Denver's incorporation process (1872-1875). When she died suddenly without leaving any children behind,Longmont became orphaned once again Commodore Perry Expedition forces burned Longmont on July 14th 1865 due to food shortages caused by American Civil War hostilities between pro-slavery states (the Union) vs Confederate States (the Confederacy). Some early residents of longmont included: Horace Greeley who served as editor of New York Tribune; Salmon Pearsall who served as City Clerk; Willard Richards who also served as Mayor from 1889-1901; Augustus Herlock Hodge who also served as Treasurer from 1903-1907; Milton Sizer who also served as Town Manager from 1907-1914; Charles Evans Hughes Sr., one half owner of Denver Post Co.; Samuel Morse & Alfred Vail coining silver bullets at Joplin Arsenal!
