Longmont is a small town located in Weld County, Colorado, United States. The population was 8,699 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Denver–Aurora-Lakewood Metropolitan Statistical Area. The University of Colorado at Longmont is located in the town. The area that now makes up Longmont was first settled by Hidatsa and Arapaho Indians in the late 18th century. In 1868, Gold Rush miners discovered gold near what is now Longmont. By 1870, there were over 100 residents living in what is now Longmont. The first store opened in 1871 on Third Street between Jefferson and Curtis Streets. By 1895, there were 5 businesses in downtown Longmont with a total sales volume of $11 million! In 1902, mining operations ended and Leadville became the new center for trade and commerce in Weld County as a result of large shipments of lead ore coming through Leadville from nearby mines such as Asbestos and Telluride Mines. In 1923, when oil began to be drilled for off-shore production off Weld County’s coastlines, local companies got into the oil business too; this led to the development of several buildings within Short Hills Eleven blocks south of downtown: Chevron Building (now used as an office building), National Examiner Building (now used as a library), First Interstate Bank Building (later became known as Chase Manhattan Bank), and Wacoal Building (now known as Empire State Plaza). The 1960s saw significant redevelopment take place around First Avenue between Morse Boulevard and Broadway—including construction of retail malls including Burlington Mall (now JCPenney) and Civic Center mall; this also included demolition or renovation of many older buildings which had been standing vacant for years while they were being renovated or demolished. The 1970s also saw strong growth due to oil production resumed along Keystone Lake after it had been idled for many years due to environmental concerns about potential spills from storage tanks associated with that project; this led to increased job opportunities for people who worked on those projects. Additionally, tourism began becoming more prevalent throughout Weld County following renewed interest in outdoor activities following both global events such as Expo ‘70 held annually hereabouts (and later world championships) thanks largely to natural gas discoveries off southeastern Colorado beneath Anaconda Ridge—the first commercial natural gas field outside North Dakota since 1920—and resultant increases prices for electricity resulting from all that drilling activity worldwide! Starting around 1984 heavy industry slowly vacated downtown streets leading up Rugby Road towards I-25 while most shops closed down between Morse Boulevard/Broadway exits until elements like Loews Regency Hotel moved into space once again on Main Street east across I-25 but continued operations out front until 1996 when they merged with Regency Ballpark which closed shortly thereafter followed by KFC across I-25 soon thereafter leaving most storefront vacancies open until 2004 when Sears went bankrupt leaving much unused real estate empty much like what we see today just north of I-25 exit ramps just west of Walmart

These efforts failed however becauseDenver City officials saw potential in annexation proposals from other towns within their boundaries (such as Westminster) while Judges refused to recognize municipal rights without proper process or evidence). In 1909, another attempt was made to create an autonomous municipality but again Judges ruled against it on jurisdictional grounds refusing recognition until 1912 when Mayor Harry Sanger petitioned for incorporation into Denver City following the completion of Interstate 25 between Longmont and Aurora After much discussion over whether or not to incorporate at this point (due in large part to lacklustre business prospects), on July 1 1912Longmont incorporated as an unincorporated community under the name "Longmont." The first mayor was John Witherspoon who served three terms from 1912-1916; he also served as Vice President during World War I Though unincorporated at this time, many long distance merchants carried out day-to-day operations through longdistance mail service using routes established by farmerssteading along I-25 northward from Pueblo
