Longmont is a town in Weld County, Colorado, United States. The population was 6,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Denver–Aurora-Lakewood metropolitan area. The first white people to arrive in what is now Longmont were the Meeker family in 1859. They started a small store and post office on Main Street. In 1863, David Long built a sawmill on the same site and named it after himself. He also founded the first school in Longmont which opened in 1865. In 1875, John Wesley Powell explored and mapped much of today's western Rockies while he was exploring for mining concessions with his brother Horace near Aspen. When they found no gold but did find many coal seams, they decided to move their business to Trinidad (now Durango) because of its proximity to Aspen and the potential for developing those seams into mines. However, when they got there they realized that there was no water available so they returned home and resumed exploration their next year with brothers Charles Hennepin and John Atherton – this time finding some gold along their travels! They finally moved back to Longmont in 1879 where they established an official mine company with 3 partners: George Ourisman (a banker), James Pikes (a banker), and AugustANA member James Wickersham (of Boston). The original millrace still runs through town today as does Main Street which begins just outside of town limits on the other side of Drury Canyon Lake before continuing east through downtown until it arrives at US Highway 24/I-25 about 10 miles northeast of Longmont proper.
