At his retirement party on December 12th Mayor Weitzel announced plans to set up an endowed chair at Montrose Community College to help promote assimilation and integration between Montrose and neighboring towns within Weld County during his final years in office–a plan later accepted by county commissioners as well (Weitzel died before he could see it through). Longmont's economy has been based largely upon agriculture since its founding; today about 60% of the community's revenue comes from economic development activities such as manufacturing or tourism rather than services like education or government employment.
